Job Summary

Following the phenomenal success of our 2019 International Summer School and British Council accreditation, Sedbergh School is looking to recruit enthusiastic EFL Teachers to join our dynamic team for Summer 2020.

You will plan and deliver exciting, inspiring lessons to our international students, as well as participating in the extra-curricular programme through fun excursions and activities.

Based across spectacular Lake District locations, Sedbergh ISS is a great way to spend this Summer!

Details of Position

Reporting directly to the Director of Studies (DOS), you will have your own class of up to 15 students, with a mixture of nationalities, for 22 hours of EFL lessons per week (General English Teaching).

You will also be involved with sport, activities, excursions and pastoral care, and will be required to undertake occasional overnight residential duties. There will be one full day off per week.


As an EFL Teacher for Sedbergh International Summer School, you will:

- Assist the Director of Studies with placement testing of students on arrival;
- Prepare and deliver exciting and inspiring lessons, tailored to individual student levels, to ensure that maximum benefit is gained from their lessons;
- Teach according to the curriculum as directed by the Director of Studies, providing a positive, controlled and student-centred classroom learning environment;
- Manage classroom behaviour effectively to ensure that all students actively participate in lessons;
- Maintain administrative systems by preparing and keeping class lists, records of work, class
registers and preparing detailed individual reports to strict deadlines;
- Continuously assess student progress, providing useful and relevant feedback;
- Lead, supervise or assist with sport or activity sessions;
- Attend, and at times lead, weekly excursions to UK cities;
- Undertake wake up and lights out duties, staying overnight in student boarding houses on a rota basis;
- Assist with mealtime and break time supervision;
- Escort students to and from their boarding houses and provide supervision in Houses;
- Engage with the students outside of class in a friendly yet professional manner;
- Give effective pastoral support to students as required;
- Maintain an awareness of your responsibility to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the students during meals, break times and when in accommodation areas;
- Assist at any time, whether on duty or not, with an emergency situation or where a student is injured.


What we are looking for (essential requirements):

- A TEFL qualification (Trinity or CELTA or equivalent) plus a minimum of 1 year of previous EFL experience teaching children in a classroom situation;
- Excellent organisation and communication skills;
- Energy, enthusiasm and the ability to motivate pupils;
- A flexible attitude and ability to work under pressure;
- A good sense of humour and demonstrable ability to work as part of a team;
- A willingness and desire to be involved in the sport and extra-curricular programme;
- For the benefit of students paying to attend the course, you must have a native level, or near native level of English.

Our ideal candidate would also have (desirable requirements):

- Previous summer school and/or boarding school experience;
- The ability to speak other languages is an advantage.


Dates for the courses will be as follows:

- 28th June - 25th July (weeks 1-4) - arriving at Brathay Hall (Ambleside) on 26th June for induction
- 26th July - 17th August (weeks 5-7) - arriving at Casterton Sedbergh Preparatory School (Casterton) on 24th July for induction

**Please inform the School on application if you can attend all 7 weeks of the course or, if not, whether you would be available for weeks 1-4 or 5-7, as per the dates set out above.

Working with children:

All staff applying to Sedbergh International Summer School will have stringent checks made as to their suitability to work with children. Appointment will be subject to the following:

- Receipt by the School of two satisfactory references, which will include responses to a specific enquiry about whether there is any impediment to the prospective staff member being employed in a situation where he/she will have responsibility for/access to and the care of children;
- Receipt by the School of an enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) certificate;
- Proof of identity and all relevant qualifications will be required, and photocopies taken of the original certificates;
- Any gaps in Applicants employment history will be questioned and must be satisfactorily explained;
-Applicants also need to be aware that if they have spent longer than three months outside of the UK in the last five years then as well as applying for an enhanced DBS they will also need to obtain a Police Check or other DBS equivalent to cover the time spent overseas. This is due to the DBS not having access to overseas criminal records as part of its Disclosure service.
