- Italy: Palmi, Calabria.
- The Stamford School of English
- Experience: 1 YEAR
- Positions: 3
- Degree Required
Details of Position
The Stamford School was set up in 2000 by its current owner and director, Sam Dyer. We offer high quality English language courses to children, teenagers, adults and businesses from our 2 centres in Calabria.
Unlike many of the language schools nearby, The Stamford does not belong to a national or international chain of schools and has established a reputation for providing a very English-feel environment, which places the learner at the centre of everything we do.
As a member of Aisli (a highly-regarded association of English Language Schools in Italy), we are committed to looking after our students and staff and place great emphasis on learning and development. The successful candidates will therefore be reflective and creative practitioners, who enjoy researching new thinking to share with colleagues and students alike. Most of our teachers stay for more than their first year due to the support and atmosphere of the school; some have even settled here and have families now.
The school director, Sam, has close links with the UK education sector and encourages the team to adopt and adapt new approaches to ensure our students are accessing the very best English language teaching available. In addition to Sam's 28-year career in TEFL, her recent teaching and management experience in the UK primary school and special needs fields, will provide key training opportunities next year for our teachers to develop their skills to help all our learners reach their full potential.
As a Stamford team member you will also:
*Have help in settling in, including pick up upon arrival and help with all accommodation
*Enjoy a fully-paid induction period before starting your full timetable, which will
focus on getting to know the schools, the team, our courses and students.
*Access weekly group lessons in Italian, paid for by the school.
*Access daily, on-hand support with lesson planning from our experienced Director and
Assistant Director of Studies, Emma and Olivia.
*Benefit from a comprehensive programme of professional development including methodology
workshops, peer observations, team teaching opportunities, learning walks, appraisals,
mentoring and training opportunities.
*Have the opportunity to become a qualified Cambridge Speaking Examiner (dependent on
experience meeting Cambridge requirements)
*Enjoy a well-stocked staffroom with all the latest teaching resources, wifi throughout
the school and a laptop and projector in each of our classrooms.
*Teaching 24 hours of General English and Cambridge Exam courses from Monday to Friday,
with courses typically running in the afternoons and evenings, 3pm-9pm
*Teaching to all levels and ages (Young Learners, Teens and Adults), although the Upper
Suite Exam Courses (First, Advanced and Proficiency) are assigned in line with relevant
*Our core business is in-house teaching (ie no outsourced courses in state schools) in
our modern centres: 2-3 days in each school, approx. a 20-minute drive apart (school car
and/or lifts provided)
WHERE WE ARE:
Calabria is a stunning, little-known region in the very south of Italy, just before you cross over to the island of Sicily. The Stamford School has its main school in the small, clifftop town of Palmi, which offers fabulous views of Sicily and the Eolian Islands. We are in the very centre of town and our students often spill out into the bar below for an ice-cream (or aperitivo!) or into the square next to us with its towering palm trees. Sandy beaches are just a 5-minute drive below the town and the famous Aspromonte mountains stand behind us.
Palmi has good rail links with Naples and Rome to the North and to the South, a 15-minute train ride will take you to the port of Villa San Giovanni for ferries to Sicily.
The international airport of Lamezia Terme (Ryanair to UK) is just 35 minutes away by motorway.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
*A dedicated, energetic English teacher with a passion for motivating, nurturing and
guiding our learners.
*A reflective practitioner, keen to work closely with like-minded colleagues.
*A teacher with know-how gained in established language schools and able to draw upon
this to anticipate workload, carry out effective, formative assessments
and plan ahead.
*A super-friendly, caring professional with strong interpersonal skills and an ability
to forge positive working relationships with colleagues.
