Job Summary

Mackenzie School of English is now recruiting a Centre Manager to join our residential management team in July.

Details of Position

Based in Edinburgh and British Council accredited, we run a successful year-round school and a well-established residential summer centre at Merchiston Castle. This year, Merchiston Castle is once again home to our all-inclusive four week summer residential programme for 12-17 year olds. A highly prestigious boarding school based in 100 acres of beautiful parkland, the extensive campus is only a couple of miles from the city centre and is also the location of the ruins of 13th Century Colinton Castle.

Working on at our residential summer school, you will ensure our teaching and activity programme are delivered to a high standard by managing staff members efficiently and positively, liaising with the centre management team and Head Office, overseeing student welfare, and dealing with any issues which may arise in the day-to-day operation of the centre. It will also be your responsibility to ensure that all of Mackenzie School of Englishs policies and procedures are adhered to, that all necessary paperwork is kept up-to-date and communicated with Head Office, and that staff records are in order. You will also be required to participate in the set up and close down of the centre as well as deliver an on-site induction and orientation for all centre staff, Group Leaders and students upon arrival.

Successful candidates must be available to attend paid induction and training throughout the week beginning 25th June with accommodation provided if necessary. The Centre Manager will be expected to live on-site from the morning of 1st July 2018.


All applicants must be eligible to work in the UK. We are not able to sponsor work permit visa applications.

Essential Criteria:
Experience working with young people.
Experience of working in a similar role.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
English proficiency.
Responsible approach to working with juniors.

A first degree.
Experience with summer schools.
Local knowledge.
Flexibility of working hours.
Ability to cope under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to multi-task.
Strong ability to lead, manage and motivate a team and liaise with the host centre.
Excellent time management.
DELTM or other ELT Management qualification.
Level 1 Safeguarding.

Salary and Benefits

All residential positions include free board and accommodation. Employees also receive full role specific comprehensive induction and ongoing continuous professional development.
Attractive starting salary, £520 - £550 per week based on qualifications and experience, plus statutory holiday pay. Induction paid at competitive hourly rate.
