About Celtic English Academy

Celtic English Academy, established in 2004, is a British Council accredited English language school based in the centre of Cardiff. For over 20 years, we have delivered high-quality English language education to adults and young learners, supported by a dedicated and experienced academic team.

We have been running Junior Summer Programmes since 2018 and are delighted to be expanding in 2026 to include a second venue in Mayfield, East Sussex, alongside our long-standing programme at Haberdashers' Monmouth School, located in the beautiful Wye Valley.

Position Overview

This role is ideal for an experienced Director of Studies who enjoys supporting teachers, delivering high-quality learning experiences, and creating a positive educational environment for young people.
As Director of Studies, you will hold responsibility for the academic leadership and day-to-day running of the Junior Summer Programme. Working closely with the Centre Manager onsite and the Academic Director in Cardiff, you will lead a team of seasonal EFL teachers, oversee academic delivery, and ensure students aged 11-17 receive an engaging, supportive, and high-quality learning experience.
You will balance structure with flexibility, professionalism with warmth, and leadership with collaboration, helping both students and staff thrive within a residential summer school setting.

Key Responsibilities

Academic & Programme Management

  • Review, update, and refine the junior summer syllabus and teaching materials
  • Ensure high-quality academic delivery across all classes
  • Supervise testing, level placement, and academic reporting

Staff Management & Support

  • Deliver teacher inductions and provide ongoing academic support
  • Line-manage a team of teachers recruited by the year-round academic team
  • Support teachers in delivering engaging, student-centred lessons using up-to-date resources

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with British Council standards and safeguarding requirements
  • Work closely with Course Directors and Managers to ensure the overall success of the programme
  • Contribute to performance monitoring and continuous improvement

Degree Required

Applicants should have one of the following required qualifications:
Cambridge DELTA

Teaching experience: 2 years

Essential Experience, Skills, Education, Training & Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree (Level 6)
  • TEFLQ status: Cambridge DELTA or Trinity DipTESOL
  • Proven academic leadership or management experience
  • Experience teaching or supporting young learners aged 1117
  • Strong organisational, communication, and team leadership skills
  • Ability to manage a busy academic programme within a residential setting
  • Commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing
  • Confidence using academic systems and administrative processes

Nice to Have

  • Experience working in summer schools or residential programmes
  • British Council inspection experience or academic compliance knowledge
  • Experience delivering CPD or mentoring teaching staff
  • Familiarity with platforms such as Fidelo, Asana, and Google Drive system

Safeguarding & Legal Requirements

  • Right to work in the UK
  • Two references
  • Enhanced DBS check (company-paid if required)
  • Completion of Safeguarding and Prevent Duty training
  • Compliance with safer recruitment procedures

Salary and Benefits

  • Mayfield: £790.50 - £832 per week (depending on experience & qualifications) (full-board accommodation provided)
  • Cardiff: £624 per week (room-only accommodation provided)
  • Salary paid in two instalments (end of July and end of August)
  • Pro-rated holiday pay (paid at the end of the contract)
  • Access to onsite sports facilities (gym and swimming pool)
