Lead Our Academic Team This Summer

Language in Action, part of Malvern International, is seeking an experienced, TEFLQ-qualified Director of Studies (DoS) to lead our academic teams at Junior Summer centres across the UK. About the Role

As Director of Studies, you will oversee all academic operations at your centre - from teacher management and student placement to quality assurance and safeguarding. You'll ensure that our students (aged 12-18) have a rewarding learning experience that meets and exceeds expectations.

Locations: London, Manchester, Liverpool, Canterbury, Oundle (East Midlands)

Organisation: Language in Action (part of Malvern International)

Positions Available: 9

Contract Type: Short-term / Summer (Residential)

Qualification Required: Degree + TEFLQ certification (Cambridge DELTA, Trinity DipTESOL, or equivalent meeting British Council standards)

Experience Required: Minimum 3 years

Right to Work: Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Management
  • Lead, motivate, and support a team of EFL teachers.
  • Conduct teacher inductions, daily briefings, and regular training sessions.
  • Organise placement testing, marking, and class streaming.
  • Create and manage class timetables, registers, and records of work in line with British Council standards.
  • Assign teachers based on skills, experience, and availability.
  • Observe lessons, provide feedback, and support teacher development.
  • Cover classes when necessary and ensure continuity of learning.
  • Coordinate timetabling with the Activity Manager to balance teaching and activities.
  • Liaise with Group Leaders and act as the academic representative on site.
  • Maintain accurate administrative records, including staff hours and reports.
  • Ensure teaching materials and classroom resources are organised and available.
  • Monitor student numbers and maintain efficient class sizes.
  • Promote academic visibility around campus through updated notice boards and communication.
  • Take part in social events and excursions, motivating the team to engage in centre life.

Safeguarding & Welfare

  • Complete Level 2 Safeguarding and Prevent training before employment.
  • Ensure all staff comply with company safeguarding, child protection, and health and safety policies.
  • Induct staff on Safeguarding and H&S procedures.
  • Liaise with the Welfare Officer on fire drills, supervision, and attendance.
  • Ensure all safeguarding and Prevent procedures are correctly implemented.
  • Serve as a professional role model for both staff and students.

Centres include: London (Bloomsbury, UCL, Wembley, Colindale, UEL Docklands, Harrow Westminster, Middlesex University), Manchester (University of Manchester), Liverpool (Liverpool Hope University), Canterbury (Canterbury Christ Church University), East Midlands (Oundle Boarding School, Northamptonshire).

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A university degree
  • TEFLQ qualification (Cambridge DELTA, Trinity DipTESOL, or equivalent meeting British Council standards)
  • Minimum 3 years EFL teaching experience
  • Experience in academic or teacher management
  • Excellent ICT and administrative skills (MS Office, Excel, IWBs)
  • Experience in residential summer schools

Desirable:

  • Experience with British Council inspections
  • Native or near-native English proficiency

Hours, Salary & Benefits

Hours: Approx. 43 hours per week, 5-6 days (some evenings/weekends required)
Salary: £720/week (TEFLQ) | £665/week (Non-TEFLQ) - gross rate
Holiday Pay: Accrued per UK regulations
Accommodation: Full-board (single room, breakfast, lunch & dinner included) - residential role
