English Online subscription is a premium teaching product aimed at adults learning English at any level. English for Work is a premium economy teaching product with a greater emphasis on asynchronous learning. IELTS Coach is a fully customisable course that prepares students for IELTS through group and private classes.
Role Purpose
- To maintain and enhance quality teaching and learning in the English Online classroom through monitoring and supporting teachers and adhering to British Council teaching standards and policies
- To contribute to the development and improvement of English Online products and services in order to increase English Online learners' sense of progress and satisfaction
- To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission
Main Accountabilities
- The main focus of the role is supporting and managing teachers to deliver quality online teaching and effective learning of English.
Service Delivery
- Leading on the selection of online teachers to support the process of recruitment
- Providing academic management and support to a large cohort of existing English Online teachers as per performance management guidelines, policies and procedures
- Coordinating flexible and sponsored courses (closed groups), including syllabus creation, specific teacher support, monitoring and evaluation activities
- Conducting regular observations of classes in line with the British Council teaching standards, monitoring teaching quality and student experience
- Monitoring the quality of teacher reports and assessments, including private class reports, group reports and other teacher-created documentation
Teaching Standards
- Delivering ongoing onboarding and product orientation to newly hired teachers
- Working closely with the Sales and Customer Service team to deal with academic enquiries and complaints
- Contributing to the design and supporting the implementation of the yearly Teaching Excellence Action Plan and English Online objectives
- Participating in the preparation and acting on the results of the yearly Teaching Centre Performance Review of English Online
- Supporting the English Online Teaching Excellence Lead with any other academic management activities related to English Online learners, teachers and other stakeholders as needed
Subject Expertise
- Acting as a role model for good classroom practice by encouraging teachers to observe them teaching and doing demonstration lessons
- Organising and conducting training sessions (live and asynchronous) to teachers working in EOL contexts in different time zones
- Keeping abreast of developments in online teaching pedagogy and practice and bringing these to the attention of teachers and colleagues through presentations and practical sessions
Risk management and compliance
- Supporting the Safeguarding, EDI and SEND (Additional Needs) leads, or leading on Safeguarding, EDI or SEND initiatives, to ensure British Council global policies are adhered to in the classroom and are embedded in the English Online culture
Product Development
- Collecting and collating suggestions from teachers regarding improvement of materials, platform features and syllabi
- Contributing to the development of new English Online products and product features via assessing their pedagogical merit
- Supporting smaller content-related projects by liaising with vendors, managing freelance materials developers, conducting quality checks and coordinating with the digital team.
- Supporting the English Online Content Lead with management activities related to English Online product development as needed
Analysis and Reporting
- Contributing to the evaluation and improvement of the EOL classroom experience via analysis of student and client feedback from various sources
Leadership and Management
- Managing a small team of teachers to perform non-teaching academic activities (e.g. content creation, teacher training projects, observations, other teacher support)
- The post holder will not have a regular teaching timetable but will be required to substitute at short notice. The number of teaching hours per week may reach 5-7 on average.

Successful applicants will not be employed directly by the British Council. Individuals will be engaged on hourly-paid contracts by an agency in their country. Introductions to the agencies and any subsequent engagement will be managed by Guidant Global, an outsourced recruitment partner in the UK.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate Degree
- TEFL-I/CELTA qualification, or equivalent as recognised by the British Council
- TEFL-Q qualification (Diploma-level EFL/TESOL), or equivalent
Desirables
- Relevant IH Certificate / Diploma in ELT Management, or similar.
- Relevant Masters
