Details of Position

The Director of Studies acts as line manager for the teaching team and reports to the Course Director. They are responsible for planning, implementing and monitoring the performance of the academic programme.

We are seeking to appoint a well-qualified, committed and dynamic Director of Studies to run the English course component of the 2024 Whitgift Summer School. As Director of Studies you need to be a dynamic and inspirational leader, with a high standard of professionalism and passion for ELT who can enthuse and manage the teaching team to deliver innovative and engaging student-centred lessons using up to date resources and involving native-speaking students, a real point of difference for this summer school. Applicants will be expected to be flexible and innovative in their approach to working practices and must lead high-quality teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the full life of our busy summer school.

We would like the Director of Studies to start in advance of the summer school start date in order to plan the course and the staff induction. This early start provides an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the facilities and prepare for the beginning of the course. We anticipate the start date to be week commencing 17 June 2024.

Pre-Course Responsibilities include:
- Providing input in creating the Summer School Syllabus and course design
- Liaising with the Activity Manager regarding the social programme, particularly in relation to the excursions and how social and academic ties can be strengthened
- Running the teachers induction training at the school prior to course commencement
- Managing the testing and class placement of new arrivals


Course Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring the educational programme at the school is delivered according to the Whitgift Summer School standards as laid out in publicity materials and staff handbooks
- Establishing a motivating and supportive learning environment is provided in classrooms and at the school, appropriate to the age of the students
- Teaching when necessary to provide cover for absent teachers
- Supporting, managing and guiding teachers through lesson observations and feedback
- Effectively carry out teacher reviews and appraisals as directed
- Organising and hosting the formal presentation of Leavers Certificates and awards at the graduation ceremony
- Ensuring all relevant Risk Assessments are fully completed, understood and signed by staff members
- Being aware of, monitoring and managing students conduct and behaviour in order to promote a harmonious international community in which every student can be confident and unafraid to
voice opinions and thrive, no matter what their beliefs, customs or differences
- Being an active member of the Senior Staff team and to help and support the Course Director whenever necessary and appropriate

Qualifications

You will have a university degree and be DELTA qualified (or equivalent qualification) with proven management experience in this field. Applicants with direct experience of delivering student-centred short summer courses for learners of English are particularly welcome to apply. You need to be a dynamic and inspirational leader with a high standard of professionalism and passion for ELT. You need to be able to enthuse and manage the teaching team to deliver innovative and engaging student-centred lessons using up to date resources and involving native-speaking students, a real point of difference for this summer school. Native/Near-native competence in spoken and written English is essential.
