Job Summary

Posts are for Primary and Early years teachers primarily but that there maybe some opportunities available to teach Secondary and Adults
Posts are part time up to 21 hours per week but that there may be opportunities for additional hours for successful and appropriately qualified teachers.

To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English

Main Accountabilities

Support British Councils global English strategy by

delivering teaching to the highest standards of English Language Teaching
enhancing British Councils reputation as a world authority in English Language Teaching
continuing professional development and sharing of best practices

Ensuring teaching meets learner needs and expectations
Ensuring teaching meets Teaching Quality standards and organisational expectations
Maintaining good relationships with customers and colleagues
Supporting the teaching centres activities and British Council plans

Main duties

Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles. Ensure that lesson materials are tailored appropriately to the needs of particular groups and individuals, and that British Council materials are used to maximum effect to meet learners needs.
Monitor and assess progress and provide regular feedback both written and face to face to help manage students performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy, using the setting and correction of homework for that purpose. Meet individually with parents and students as part of the students learning process.
Contribute to the development and improvement of the Teaching Centre by actively working as a member of the teaching team.
Complete teaching related administrative tasks (such as prompt completion of class registers, record of classwork or break duties) to specified standards.
Actively engage in CPD to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning and maintain the British Councils position at the forefront of best ELT practices.
Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students understanding of contemporary UK.
Provide support to the teaching operation through tutorials, and guiding learners and young learner parents towards the most suitable courses and learning paths.
Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
Child Protection. Ensure all YL students are safe, secure and looked after while they are in our care.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Cert TESOL or Equivalent

Qualifications are classified as either foundation level (certificate) or experienced practitioner level (diploma):

1. Foundation Level: Certificate in TESOL (formerly described as TEFL-I)

Certificate-level qualifications are first level qualifications, usually taken by teachers with little or no TESOL experience who wish to enter the profession. To be considered as a valid certificate in TESOL, a qualification must:
- validation: be externally validated and monitored by a recognised awarding body (usually a university or exams board) and be accredited by a national, professional certification standards board such as the QCA, in the case of England. Note that the regulatory body could also be the MoE in some environments, and that in the case of professional qualifications offered by universities, the awarding body and accrediting body will be the same institution.
- teaching practice: contain at least six hours (45-60mins) of supervised teaching practice (i.e. teaching practice where a qualified assessor observes and gives feedback to the trainee teacher. Classes taught must be to a minimum of five students at two distinct levels of language proficiency.)
- TESOL input: contain at least 100 hours of directed TESOL input.
All qualifications must meet the validation, teaching practice and input criteria listed above.

Examples of certificate-level TESOL qualifications:
- Certificates in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages accredited by the QCA at level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework
- University certificates in TESOL
- Level 4 NVQ in Learning & Development
- Certificates in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Young Learners) accredited by the QCA at level 4 of the National Qualifications Framework.
3. Extension qualifications
Current recognised extension qualifications are:
NILE Teaching English in Pre-Primary Education
TYLEC Trinity Young Learners Extension Certificate
