Job Summary

A full time contract of 21 hours of teaching per week in our Main Centre in downtown Bucharest.

Details of Position

The 21 contact hours are typically made up of fourteen 90-minute lessons with young learners (8-10 and 11-14 year olds). The remaining contracted hours consist of lesson-planning, administrative tasks, and attending training and meetings. There are many teacher training and coordinator opportunities, as well as the opportunity to follow various management and general training courses.

Teaching takes place Monday-Saturday; most teachers work a Tuesday to Saturday week. Depending on teacher preferences and operational needs, teachers work either a morning/afternoon shift, with the first class being at 08:15, or an afternoon/evening shift with the last class finishing at 21:00.


Minimum/Essential: First Degree / Full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module / Cambridge CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL and/or PGCE.

Desirable: MA TESOL / Recognised diploma in EFL e.g. DELTA / Trinity Dip / YL Qualification (CELTYL or TYLEC).

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary: to be placed on the salary scale according to qualifications and experience. The current 10 point salary scale is: RON 9, 428 to RON 11,193 per month (approx. 5, 000 to 7, 000 RON net). Your salary will be paid monthly in arrears in local currency into a Romanian bank account. Your gross salary will be subject to Romanian taxes which will be deducted at source. These may vary according to Romanian law but currently the Income Tax is approx. 10%. Your gross salary will also be liable for Romanian National Insurance Contributions. These will be deducted at source and, again, these are under the control of the Romanian government and may change. They are currently at 35%.

Relocation Allowance: One-off payment of up to 500 GBP for candidates who are currently located outside Bucharest. This accountable allowance can be used to contribute towards initial transport, baggage and accommodation costs related to moving to Bucharest.

Settling in Allowance: You will receive a settling-in allowance equivalent to two weeks' salary (three weeks if accompanied). This is to help you to meet your initial expenses on first arrival in Romania. Please note all allowances are taxed. The settling-in allowance applies only to teachers recruited from outside Romania.

Annual leave: 26 days per annum paid leave. Normally this is split between Christmas and Easter with a mid semester break in February. In addition, there are up to 14 days of Romanian and UK public holidays as determined by Romanian law and the British Council.

Private Health Insurance: The British Council currently provides extra medical cover through a local health care provider, although all teachers have access to the state system which is generally adequate.

Applicants who have been resident and working in the UK immediately prior to going abroad for employment, may be liable for UK National Insurance Class 1 contributions for one year, and the British Council will pay the employer's contributions monthly in arrears in local currency into a Romanian bank account.
