Details of Position
The majority of our students are adults working at government ministries or national institutions such as the police force or border security agencies; international humanitarian and development organisations such as the United Nations; foreign diplomatic missions including the Australian and American Embassies; or for companies in the oil and gas industry. In addition to the private clients we provide training for, we also teach 500-600 students per term on our increasingly popular afternoon and evening public courses, of which approximately 30% of students are teenagers. Furthermore, we are looking to expand our Young Learners programme over the coming months.
Successful candidates will be expected to teach across a range of English language courses including General English, English for the Workplace, Professional Writing, ESP, IELTS Preparation, and on occasion provide one-to-one tuition for senior government officials. Teachers at LELI are required to teach 20-24 hours per week as well as completing administrative tasks including attendance records, ongoing student assessments and writing end of course reports for private clients. As a language training organisation we are constantly looking for ways to develop and improve what we do, so we are seeking passionate teachers keen to share their knowledge, skills and experience, and who may be interested in taking on additional roles such as developing ESP curricula, coordinating short-term teaching programmes, delivering professional development sessions, or being part of a small customer service management team.
The standard of education in Timor is generally poor, and a significant number of our students have had their education disrupted due to Timor-Leste's years of struggling for independence. Additionally, and while our students come from a variety of backgrounds, the methodology most have been exposed to means that the majority of our students have difficulty with abstract thinking and/or autonomous learning. Therefore, in conjunction with building students English language proficiency, EFL teachers at LELI also help to develop students analytical and critical thinking skills through a range of different teaching strategies.
Living and working in a hot, remote location where a significant percentage of the population live in poverty, job opportunities for the average Timorese are few and far between, amenities are basic, and infrastructure issues are commonplace requires applicants to be highly motivated and have a positive attitude. Tolerance, patience, and the ability to be flexible enough to cope with the myriad challenges associated with living and working in a post-conflict developing country are essential personal characteristics. Timor-Leste can be a challenging environment at times, but it is also a land of opportunity for those willing to invest their time and energy. The country is going through positive change and successful candidates would be helping to make a genuine difference in the development of a nation that is rich in culture and history.
Applicants must be native level English speakers.
Experience working in a developing country is desirable.
Ability and/or desire to ride a scooter or motorbike preferable.
