Job Summary

Reporting to the Principal and the Academic Operations Manager UK & Ireland, this role will primarily be based at KIE Cambridge, and may require occasional travel to other sites. The Director of Studies is responsible for overall management of the Academic department and is line manager for all teaching staff. Your objective will be to achieve the highest quality of teaching and customer service levels by leading and developing the teaching team.

We are looking for a Director of Studies to join the Kaplan International English team in Cambridge.

About the role:

Duties - General

To be responsible for the overall management of the Academic department.
To have full responsibility for the academic quality of year-round courses, and for the academic product delivered at the school
To lead the teaching team, providing support and training whilst monitoring their performance and development
To be responsible for all aspects of our students safeguarding and welfare in conjunction with the wider school and company management teams, along with all staff

Duties Academic

To ensure the highest standards of teaching are delivered
To ensure that academic programmes, courses and syllabus are being taught to requirements and adhered to
To encourage use of self-study facilities
To liaise with the Social Programme Manager to ensure that the social and academic programmes are connected
To support the development of extra study opportunities for students
To ensure that quality and feedback cycles for student and teacher are continually evaluated and improved
To advise staff and students with regard to exams and specialist courses.
To be pro-active in managing teaching resources and space
To hold regular meetings with the Principal to discuss staff and academic matters ensuring the smooth running of the school

Duties Staff

To ensure that all courses are correctly staffed, and that guidelines are met with regards to student/teacher ratios including the maintenance of a supply teacher bank
To ensure that all staff are fully and properly inducted and aware of relevant procedural documentation in order that they fulfill their duties accordingly
To ensure timely staff recruitment in liaison with others in the school management team
To ensure that staffing issues are dealt with correctly and fairly, and in time
To have a good working knowledge of staff job descriptions and duties
To lead regular teaching staff meetings and to attend regular school management meetings

Duties Students/Customer Service

To ensure that student satisfaction ratings are consistently high
To actively seek to resolve and to keep accurate records of areas of student academic concern
To have overall responsibility for Day One testing and induction for new students and to co-ordinate all school staff as required on those days
To communicate effectively with the Sales Team with regard to academic matters and to ensure that the school and company are promoted in a positive manner
To ensure that all students attendance and awareness is in accordance with Home Office / Border Agency requirements and regulations
To ensure that the attendance procedure is adhered to and delivered correctly and efficiently.
To ensure that all students and staff have a working knowledge of emergency, evacuation and health and safety procedures
To take part in the 24-hour emergency phone rota if required.

Duties Finance

In liaison with the Principal, prepare and manage teaching and resources expenditure budgets
To achieve budget targets and weekly report on statistics
Monitor expenditure according to budget and report on variances

Duties Quality

To be familiar with meet the inspection criteria of the British Council, ISI, UKBA and company requirements
To be fully aware of all internal procedures with regards to quality issues and to play a lead role in the quality cycle
To produce reports as and when required with specific recommendations for future action

Person Specification:

Education and Qualifications

DELTA / Trinity Diploma or equivalent such as MA TEFL/EFL including observed teaching or International Equivalent. (essential)
DELTM or equivalent (desirable)
A bachelors degree as minimum (desirable)

Work Experience and Knowledge


Previous management experience in EFL or related field in a commercial educational environment
Experience of line management and recruitment of a teaching team
Academic administration (timetabling etc.)
Experience of teaching all levels including Exams, EAP and Business English
Knowledge of British Council and ISI inspection criteria


Teacher training experience
Experience of working with Young Learners
E-learning experience

Skills and Competencies


Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office Package
Interest and ability to use technology in an Educational environment
Demonstrates a high level of customer service practices
Excellent communication, time management and organisational skills able to manage a wide variety of tasks and projects running concurrently.
Demonstrable interest in industry developments and commitment to personal development.
Able to manage and implement change.


An understanding of Curriculum development
Knowledge of databases CLASS or equivalent
Knowledge of IWB programs SMART or equivalent.
