Job Summary

An exciting opportunity to join a top-end EFL summer school at Harrow School. We offer a warm, professional environment where you will be working alongside a friendly team of dedicated teachers and an experienced DOS. 70% of your colleagues will be returning staff. We look for staff who are dynamic and personable and managers who can provide high quality support to our teaching team. You must be DELTA-qualified with previous experience of conducting lesson observations.

Details of Position

Harrow School Short Courses, formally known as BABSSCo, is a specialist provider of English language courses for young international students from age 9 to 17. We are run by Harrow School Enterprises, the commercial arm of Harrow School. Harrow School is located in north-west London.

Our EFL summer courses promote communication in English, focusing on the development of students' speaking, listening and pronunciation. We provide an excellent working environment where we set the bar high for performance standards but still maintain a staff retention rate of over 70%. Our staff appreciate our professional organisation and the welcoming, supportive atmosphere within the teaching team.
We are recruiting for an Assistant Director of Studies (ADOS) position for 26 July to 17 August.
This position could be combined with a three-week teaching position from 6 July to 25 July if desired, which would allow a lengthy on-the-job handover with the returning staff member who is working on an ADOS contract for the first three weeks of our summer school.
The ADOS is responsible for assisting the DOS in supervising and supporting a team of up to 25 EFL teachers and ensuring the smooth running of the academic aspect of all English language courses. In particular the ADOS has responsibility for conducting lesson observations and providing developmental guidance to teachers. He or she will be working in an experienced managerial team that is staffed entirely by returning members of staff.
Full details of the position can be found in our job specifications available to download from our website. Applications are through our website. Free accommodation is provided to all staff if required in boarding houses on site.

Our ADOS candidates should hold a first degree and either a DELTA or Trinity Diploma. Please only apply if you have already completed one of these qualifications.

We are looking for candidates with experience of conducting lesson observations and teaching teenagers, and ideally previous experience of working in a summer school environment. CELTA course tutors and academic managers who have held responsibility for teacher support are particularly welcome to apply.

Salary and Benefits

The Harrow Assistant Director of Studies pay band starts at £105.55 per day increasing to a maximum of £123.05 (£738.85 to £861.35 per week). Staff move up grades based on annual performance and appraisal results. Nearly all new staff start on the the lowest pay band for the position.
Staff paid daily are paid 1 days leave per 7 day working week in lieu of holiday. Staff work 6 days per 7 day working week, with the day off being allocated in advance of the summer via a rota, and varying from one week to the next. An average working week of up to 55 hours would be an approximate guideline, with most hours scheduled between 0830 and 1700.
Benefits include:
- Accommodation on site if required. Staff are accommodated in boarding houses normally also occupied by students, but with private staff-only bathroom facilities. Although there are dedicated pastoral staff in each house, all residential staff in houses shared with students have a duty of care to the students in their boarding house.
- Breakfast, lunch & supper each day
- Laundry (commercial laundry, once per week
- Subsidised use of sports facilities at Harrow School
