Medium-sized English Language school in Cambridge (English UK member, Accredited by British Council), requires a Director of Studies.
Role includes responsibility for academic and teacher management, recruitment, teacher development, timetabling, academic planning, syllabus, teaching and learning resources etc.
Applicants should have relevant academic management experience and be DELTA qualified or equivalent, with excellent leadership, organisational and interpersonal skills.

St Giles International Cambridge: Director of Studies
St Giles International was founded in 1955. Our Cambridge centre was acquired only last year (2017). Following a complete refurbishment of the main building, it was re-branded as a St Giles centre at the beginning of this year (2018). The centre is our 8th year-round centre. We have four others in the UK, 2 in the USA and 1 in Canada. We also run a group of Summer Centres for Juniors in the UK, USA and Canada. St Giles International is one of the largest and most respected independent UK providers of English language courses. We employ around 250 people. Main Role:
The Director of Studies (DoS) plays a key role within the School and is responsible for the day-to-day academic management of the school and teaches on a regular basis. The DoS leads a small staff of permanent and temporary teachers (around 10 off-season) but this could rise to around 20 during the summer. As a senior manager, the DoS will need to be flexible and hard-working and work closely with the Principal on issues relating to the overall running of the School.

Core duties:
Academic Staff Management
To plan and oversee the procedures for the intake of new students and their placement into classes
To maintain staff records, oversee the issuing of contracts to temporary teaching staff and to manage payroll for the teaching team
To deal with teachers holiday requests and to maintain a record of leave taken and remaining
To oversee the briefing and induction advice given to new teachers
To plan and implement a Teacher Development Programme
To plan and implement the timetables of all courses and to ensure liaison between teachers. Timetables should be planned to take account of the need for economic teacher/student ratios
To arrange cover for absent teachers and to ensure that the timetable is maintained at all times. This may involve the extra teaching where necessary.
Outside July-August the DoS should expect to teach for approximately 20 lessons per week, with the rest of the their working hours should be devoted to DoS duties. The number of lessons per week teaching, is subject to review on a regular basis.
To maintain adequate staffing levels by forward planning and by the recruitment of appropriately qualified new teachers using established recruitment protocol
Arranging cover for sick teachers requires the DoS to take calls from teachers at home in the morning or evening, and to make calls to teachers who are on cover to teach for absent colleagues.
To ensure that the teachers are adequately briefed and kept abreast of academic and school matters on a regular basis through weekly meetings, presentations, e-newsletters, the teachers handbook and other suitable channels
Academic Resources and Facilities
To assist in the selection and ordering of text books and other teaching materials. Authorisation for all expenditure above agreed limits must be sought from the Principal
To ensure that teaching equipment is kept in a good state of repair
To assist in the supervision of building and furniture maintenance
Curriculum Development
To develop and implement new courses and ideas for teaching as appropriate
To keep up-to-date with changes to educational theory and practice and to filter these changes to teachers
Review all academic policies, schemes of work, student progress and curriculum documents at least annually
To manage the academic programme in line with St Giles stated policy on teaching approaches and methodologies
Student Services
To oversee the running of student support services including: exams guidance, special educational needs and student reports etc.
To oversee the running of public and in-house exams
Quality Assurance
To ensure that high standards of teaching are maintained
To understand and implement all relevant accreditation scheme criteria in order for the School to remain compliant and to strive towards excellence
To evaluate teachers performance, deal with teachers comments and/or grievances, and to bring to the Principals notice any matters relating to staff disciplinary problems
In conjunction with the Principal, to assist in the appraisal of permanent teachers on an annual basis and to provide regular feedback to temporary teachers.
To monitor the quality of the schools academic standards through observations, evaluation of student feedback, and by monitoring and checking records of work, course planning sheets, attendance records, records of counselling sessions, etc.
To participate in the schools emergency telephone rota
To support in the safeguarding policies of the school in relation to the teaching staff and students studying with the school
To teach as directed by the Principal up to a maximum of 20 lessons per week
To support the Principal in evaluating, co-ordinating and developing academic aims, initiatives and standards in line with existing Group policy
To lead by example and support and attend all major School events
To keep the Principal fully informed and in a timely fashion, of major events, problems and developments concerning any area of the Colleges activities for which the DoS is normally responsible
To deputise for the Principal in their absence
To manage and facilitate any other School projects and initiatives that fall within the post-holders range of competency as directed by the Principal and/or Managing Director
Starting Date: March 2018
Salary: £30-32K pa + Profit Related Pay (not guaranteed)

Holidays: For each complete period of 12 calendar months service the DoS will be entitled to 24 days personal holiday, with an additional 2 working days from the second year of service and with an additional 1 working day per year of service thereafter, rising to a maximum 30 working days per year.
Pension: In accordance with recent legislation on pension arrangements for all employees, the employee will be auto-enrolled onto the Company's basic pension scheme after they have completed 3 months service, but they may elect to opt out.
