Job Summary

We are looking for strong teachers of general/business English to deliver our carefully prepared, copyrighted legal English lessons to students at our Cambridge centre.

Details of Position

We are currently looking for two teachers to join us in 2018. The first position is initially for a fixed term of 7 May - 7 September 2018. Our courses are for either 21 or 30 hours per week and this is the maximum any teacher is required to be in the classroom. However, we have a policy where possible of not having a teacher in the classroom for maximum hours as our courses are designed to have students do a lot of work that requires marking and we allow for this within the timetable. We are happy to discuss this further at interview. There will be some exam marking and proofreading work involved during the month of June when we have no classes and this can be done from home. The second position involves the same teaching and marking duties during our busy summer season and runs from 9 July - 7 September. There is a possibility of extending the term of employment for the right candidate.
Effective legal English is a careful blend of general and business English with commercial legal vocabulary as an essential element of lessons. We have developed our own teaching material to make lessons as practical and relevant as possible. Material will be provided in advance of teaching and come with notes for teachers as well as full support being available on site. Legal English involves a great deal of reading and writing on the part of the student and our teachers need to be enthusiastic and supportive to make a challenging ESP subject for students as stimulating as possible. The role involves encouraging absolute accuracy at every step and correcting errors as much as possible as employers of lawyers are not too forgiving of grammar and spelling errors. Our students are mostly law undergraduates who want legal English skills on their CV with some practising lawyers who feel they need to improve their language skills for their current role.
Applications by email with a CV and a detailed covering letter. Interviews will take place in Cambridge.

It is not necessary to be a lawyer to apply for this position. In the past we have found that lawyers tend to slip into lecturing on law and that is not what is required. A willingness to familiarise yourself with our material and empathy with students who are studying a very challenging area of ESP is much more important.
A minimum of 2 years teaching experience

Salary and Benefits

Our initial rate of pay is £26,000 per year pro rata which is negotiable should the position be extended. We are flexible when it comes to discussing work on a freelance basis for those candidates who prefer this option.
