The Preparation Program at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University is a bridge program between high school and admission into degree programs. All faculty in the program must understand, believe in, and successfully implement methodology, techniques, and classroom management that are skills-based, student-centered, communicative, and interactive. They must be proficient in the use of technology and be able to use the Blackboard Learning Management System along with familiarity with utilization of the S.I.S. on Banner. Since all record keeping, documentation of attendance, and the delivery of quizzes, tests, and standardized examinations are done online, the faculty must keep abreast of any training that is given in those areas. Faculty are expected to participate in one form or another in continuous professional development training which is conducted prior to and during each academic year, Engagement is the keyword where faculty are expected to be engaged in truly educating the students and also to keeping the students engaged in their studies at all times.
The program consists of three levels – Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Each level corresponds to A2, B1, and B2 on the CEFR. or corresponding to the overall EILTS scores of 3.5, 4.5, and 5 to enter each level, and 5.5 is required to exit into the Core Degree programs. Those students that do not meet the minimum requirements to enter the program may be admitted into programs sponsored by the department of Continuing Education and the English Language Institute. Since this is a split campus for both male and female students, approximately 500 – 550 students are found on each campus.
Each level has a lead instructor or coordinator to work with and guide the instructional activities of the level. The program involves 20 hours of direct instruction in English along with an additional 10 hours or enhanced learning activities. At the intermediate and advanced levels, students have 20 contact hours of English, 10 contact hours of enhanced learning activities, 2 hours of study skills, and 5 hours of mathematics. The teaching load of each instructor is 20 – 22 contact hours per week along with 5 office hours. Additional time will be involved with committee, university and/or community related activities. Classes run from 8:00 a.m. to as late as 11:00 pm each work day.
2. Bachelor’s degree is sometimes acceptable with CELTA or TESOL along with 2 or more years of university language instruction experience. However, doctoral degrees generally are more suited for the degree programs.
3. Must have at least 2 years of experience in teaching ESL/EFL at the university level or in preparation bridge programs, however, prefer 5 years (or more) experience.
4. Flexibility and the ability to teach English and/or Study Skills at more than one level is essential.
5. The ability to plan lessons ahead of time, follow good classroom management procedures, a willingness to accept correction and/or guidance from those in-charge, demonstrate professional ethics in dealings with students and colleagues, and demonstrate respect for students along with their cultural and religious values.
