Details of Position

UIC Teachers offers a free, professional and supportive service to teachers looking to work in Japan. We send teachers to work at Shane English School, a well-known and established group of schools with branches across the greater Tokyo area as well as in other cities. Shane Japan is owned by a Japanese education company and has no connection with Shane schools in other countries.
Working at Shane Japan is certainly full on but also has lots of variety. You use “proper” TEFL methodology and get good support and ongoing development. The holiday provision is excellent and you’ll have plenty of opportunity to see all this fantastic country has to offer. We’ve got plenty of tips for you on places you should visit. There is always lots to do outside of work and you’ll have a busy social life. You’ll work 5 days a week from lunchtime to mid/late evening. The working week consists of around 25 contact hours and 4 hours or so of prep time – 29.5 hours in total. Class sizes are small and there are also quite a few 1:1 lessons. The teaching schedule usually consists of approximately 50% adults and 50% young learners – these being everything from 16 years old down to 3. On arrival in Japan there is a one week orientation and training programme where you’ll look at all the courses, books and materials and go out and observe classes. You’ll also get help with getting set up - registering for the Health Scheme, setting up a bank account and any other domestic issues.
Japanese students are very respectful, diligent and supportive of their teachers – a delight! Many of our teachers find that the initial one year stay is not enough and stay much longer than they planned. The average stay for teachers is about 3 years at the moment.
