Teaching with LELI in East Timor - A diverse, enriching and inspiring experience

Teaching with LELI in East Timor - A diverse, enriching and inspiring experience

4th November 2024

By Mariann Herczeg

For the past twelve years, I’ve had the privilege of working at Lorosa'e English Language Institute (LELI) in the vibrant capital of Timor-Leste, Dili, East Timor. More than just a workplace, LELI has become a second home - a supportive community where I feel welcome and valued every single day.

LELI is a warm and inviting place from the moment you step through the doors. The reception area is bright and welcoming, and our friendly staff greet everyone with genuine smiles, setting a positive tone that carries through the whole building. The staff room is a lively, collaborative space where teachers bounce ideas off each other, surrounded by shelves of resources organized by skill and topic. I love browsing through our in-house library; new titles arrive from the UK frequently, which keeps our materials fresh and ensures that we’re always up to date with the latest teaching methods and ideas. There’s also a cozy kitchen where we can make tea or coffee and store homemade snacks, which makes it easy to recharge during busy days. Every teacher has their own desk, and for those who need it, laptops and Wi-Fi are always available, so it’s a fantastic space for creativity and planning! For those with longer breaks or who just need a moment of peace, we have a quiet upstairs rest room, complete with a bathroom. It’s these small touches that really make a difference, creating a comfortable and collaborative environment for everyone.

Our classrooms at LELI are spacious and well-equipped, with whiteboards and chalkboards on each side, projectors, and air-conditioning, creating the perfect environment for learning. Every classroom also has a designated teacher’s corner, which gives us a personal space to prepare for each lesson and engage with our students. What makes LELI particularly unique is that all our senior staff are internal appointments - each one has risen through the ranks, reflecting the institute’s commitment to recognizing talent within its own walls. Knowing that promotions are awarded to those who have shown dedication and growth over time creates a strong sense of loyalty and belonging among the team.

One of the most rewarding aspects of working at LELI is the incredible students. If you’ve ever taught English to Timorese students, you’ll know they bring something special to the classroom. They’re supportive, enthusiastic, and above all, practical learners, eager to build skills they can use in real life. Our students come from all sorts of backgrounds. Young professionals, civil servants, and even local business owners are united by a shared commitment to learning English. Many of them have specific goals in mind: some are aiming for scholarships abroad, while others are preparing for jobs in countries like Australia, particularly in hospitality and tourism. Their motivation is inspiring; they come to class with a future vision that fuels their determination to learn.

Teaching Timorese students has shown me the value they place on interactive, hands-on activities. Whether it’s a debate, a role-play exercise, or a vocabulary game, they are always eager to dive in and participate, and their enthusiasm is contagious. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work with an impressive range of clients, including government organizations, NGOs, local businesses, and international companies. This diverse mix has not only enriched my teaching experience but also broadened my understanding of various industries. Diversity makes it exciting to teach! I get to learn about different roles, challenges, and perspectives, which keeps every lesson dynamic and relevant. Working with students from different sectors allows me to plan my lessons to their real-world needs, ensuring they can immediately apply what they’ve learned.

The Timorese staff community at LELI is another source of inspiration. Their warmth, openness, and willingness to help create an atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and supported. They’re always ready to lend a hand, whether it’s offering guidance on local customs, helping me improve my Tetun language skills, or sharing a laugh over afternoon snacks! They frequently invite us to local events, introducing us to Timorese culture in a way that feels personal and meaningful. It’s not just about working together; it’s about building genuine connections that enrich our lives both inside and outside of work.

Dili, East Timor

Living in Dili is an experience that perfectly complements my work at LELI. The stunning coastal landscape, the friendly locals, and the rich cultural heritage create a beautiful backdrop for everyday life. Of course, like any place, Dili has its challenges, adapting to the slower pace and navigating occasional infrastructure issues can be a learning curve. But these experiences have only deepened my appreciation for the community and its resilience. Outside of work, life in Dili offers a wonderful mix of relaxation and adventure. I often spend weekends at the beach, sipping fresh coconut water and enjoying delicious, barbecued fish with friends. We often go cycling along the coast and snorkelling in crystal-clear waters! The nearby hills provide breathtaking hiking spots with views that make the effort worth it, while weekend trips to the districts let me explore Timor-Leste’s stunning countryside and bring back fresh fruits and vegetables for the week ahead.

As I look back on my twelve-year journey at LELI, I feel deeply grateful for the experiences that have shaped me both personally and professionally. I am continually inspired by the students and staff who bring their best selves to our shared mission, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for LELI and the incredible community here. It’s a place that has truly become a part of me, a place that continues to inspire me every day.
