Buying a House in Spain: Where and How to Do It (Buying a House S.) by Dan Boothby

Useful and comprehensive
I am thinking about buying a property in Spain as an investment and bought this book to find out more about the process. It\'s a good starting point. It covers property purchase both from the point of view of a prospective resident (i.e. moving out to Spain full-time) and as a non-resident (i.e. holiday home / letting). It has a review of the various areas and lots of information about the actual process of buying a house. There is plenty of information about tax and also about the costs and issues associated with rental. It also contains lots of useful contact details. Overall, very useful.

Mallorca and Menorca - two of Europe\'s most popular holiday resorts - are often unfairly maligned as overdeveloped package tour playgrounds. This guide seeks to redress the balance by revealing the variety to be found on these small islands.

Madrid (Rough Guide Directions S.) by Simon Baskett

Madrid is the sunniest, highest and leafiest capital in Europe and its inhabitants, the Madrileños, are so proud of the city that they modestly declare \'Desde Madrid, al Cielo\' (\'Beyond Madrid, only Heaven\'). You can debate that claim, but this compact, fascinating and lively city has no shortage of appeal for a weekend break. Aim for late spring or very early summer - or September/October - when Madrid is really pleasant, as the mid-summer months can be overbearingly hot. Madrid DIRECTIONS has all you need to get the most out of the city. Browse our ideas and you\'ll know what you want to do, 24 hours a day. Flip to places and explore the city district by district, with every sight, restaurant, bar and shop located on our easy-to-use maps. It\'s like having a local friend plan your trip. Long Stays in Spain by Peter Davey

More than half a million people own property in Spain. Many more visit for months or years on fixed term contracts, to study, or to pick up casual work. But making the move and organizing your life - especially for non-Spanish speakers - can be an uphill struggle against the complexities of Spanish law and bureaucratic protocol. In this book - a guide to living and working in Spain - the author offers concise and invaluable advice on all aspects of settling in. His insights are based on his own experiences over the past 12 years, those of many other long-stay visitors whom he has helped, and guidance from a range of Spanish officials including police officers, lawyers and property developers. From an introductory background to Spain, through the actual removal, to the issues of accommodation, health, education options, employment and retirement, personal finance and taxation, and the departure procedure - the book covers all the practicalities, procedures and problems that are likely to be encountered

Contains details about driving in spain, and tells you the laws of the road, has a full chapter on the best foods and drinks to look out for and just about everything else you\'d nead. Homage to Catalonia (Penguin Modern Classics) by George Orwell

If I Can Shoot Rabbits, Then I Can Shoot Fascists
\'Homage To Catalonia\' is an excellent account af young Orwell\'s experiences of the Spanish Civil War. Although supposedly united against Franco\'s fascists, Orwell describes the internal warfare between the various anarchist/socialist factions that made up the Republican/Government forces. It leaves the reader bitter that brave men were dying for what they believed in while politicians back home were turning a blind eye and continuing their ultimately fruitless policy of appeasement.

The New Spaniards (Penguin Politics & Political Affairs) by John Hooper

Brilliant
This book is a joy to read. A mass of perfectly chosen details - facts, anecdotes and observations - about Spain\'s recent history and how it has shaped the present. A mine of information and yet a light read.
