    Hyland Language Centre is currently looking for a DIRECTOR OF STUDIES to lead their highly respected education and teaching team. We seek a highly motivated, hard working, native English speaking professional to carry out the educational management duties which include implementing educational policy with the director, coordinating with other department heads, as well as other administrative duties.
    Hyland Language Centre is a prestigious and leading language school based in the heart of Madrid since 1985. We are an official Cambridge Examination Centre as well as a CELTA training centre. We teach over 500 adults and 100 younger learners in annual and intensive courses and employ around 35 teachers and a full time and part-time basis. Currently we are looking for a Director of Studies (DOS) to replace the outgoing DOS to lead the team of teachers in delivering language courses both within our school and off-site.

    The objective of the post is to shape and implement pedagogical policy in all its facets, ensuring the highest quality of teaching standards in all courses offered by the school. Hyland continually strives to achieve the highest possible level of student and client satisfaction with the services it provides and hence a student/client focus is also required. This will involve working in close co-operation with the Director both as a line manager facilitating communication between the director and the Heads of Departments and teachers.

    The main duties include:
    1) Educational management
    - shaping and implementing educational policy in conjunction with the director
    - providing support to and supervising the department heads and holders of responsibility positions (YLDOS, aDOSes, Head Coordinator & Coordinators etc.)
    - keeping the school up to date on new educational developments in both pedagogical and technological aspects

    2) Educational administration
    a) Timetabling - drawing up class and teacher timetables, including timetabling of YL and executive classes, co-ordinating, timetabling and carrying out placement tests
    b) Materials deciding course books and supervising the creation and organization of supplementary educational materials.
    c) Classrooms and staff room management
    d) Exams - overseeing the co-ordination and administration of end of course internal exams and external examination enrolments as well as mock exams

    3) Personnel management
    a) teacher recruitment
    b) teacher induction and welfare
    c) teacher support and development
    d) teacher supervision and observations
    e) informing director of teacher hours on a monthly basis

    4) Student welfare
    A. ensuring students are happy and making progress
    B. dealing with problem students/classes
    C. conducting student satisfaction surveys before the end of each term

    5) Teaching
    D. to teach between 6 to 9 hours EFL per week (on-site)
    E. stand-by and reserve stand-by

  • EU-nationals or candidates with a valid work permit for the EU preferred
  • Preferred qualifications: Degree-holder, CELTA, DELTA, TRINITY, MA IN APPLIED LINGUISTICS
  • Teaching experience: 5 years minimum
  • Qualifications
    The ideal candidate would:-
    - have a solid academic and EFL background which would include a university degree, the DELTA (or an M.A. in TEFL) and a minimum of 5 years experience in EFL, with considerable experience of teaching all levels including Proficiency and young learners. Experience of teaching business Englis would be an advantage.
    - experience of in-service training and/or teacher training (CELTA tutor would be an advantage)
    - have worked as a Director of Studies or ADOS (or have ample experience of dealing with people in a position of responsibility)
    - be hard-working and have the energy and stamina necessary to lead an enthusiastic and highly professional team of teachers, and to enjoy working under pressure
    - have the personal qualities needed to cope with a considerable array of very different problems and the ability to get on well with all members of staff
    - have sufficient initiative and independence to work alone but also work well as a member of a team
    - have the ability to make and implement difficult decisions
    - speak Spanish well (or be able to learn fast)
    - have a real interest in educational management and a business sense in terms of growth for the school

    The initial contract would be for a full academic year and renewable by mutual consent. Starting date would 3rd September 2014. Applicants MUST have EU citizenship or have the right to work in the EU.

    The post is based on a 39 hour working week. However, flexibility is required, as longer than average working hours will be necessary at certain times of the year.

    We offer an attractive salary and conditions which will be discussed in detail during the interview.

    Holidays include one month annual leave plus at least 10 days at Christmas and a full week at Easter plus any other public holidays.
