    "I am interested in doing a TEFL course to compliment my existing skills. I have been a journalist for two years and hold BA(Hons) in English Literature and an NCTJ post-graduate diploma in Newspaper Journalism. I would like the freedom to choose any country in the world that will take a teacher, but which course do I choose, bearing in mind I currently work full-time? I would also like to keep my hand in at writing, especially involving conservation and environmental issues. Are you aware of any such positions available or any other bodies, similar to yourself that may cater for this mix? "

    The SCHOOL

    The British School of Reggio Calabria has been delivering quality language courses since 1964. We are one of the largest Cambridge Authorised Centres in the South of Italy and were recently awarded the prestigious Platinum status. As a regularly inspected AISLI (www.aisli.com) member we maintain the highest professional and educational standards for both our students and our staff. We place great importance on teacher development and in recent years trainers such as Adrian Underhill and Jim Scrivener have led workshops at our school solely for our teachers.

    Working with us provides the opportunity to:

    • Gain experience with a wide variety of class types and sizes (depending on experience and preferences).
    • Learn from peers (there is a full-time teaching staff of 12, including Senior Teachers, a Young Learner Coordinator, and a Director of Studies), whose experience is wide and varied.
    • Develop through regular observations, appraisals, and professional development sessions.
    • Become a Cambridge ESOL Speaking Examiner (depending on experience).
    • Access a wealth of resources, including Interactive Whiteboards, Computer rooms, data projectors, and an up-to-date and well-stocked library.
    • Settle into the school and the city by attending a fully-paid induction course

    For the role of EFL TEACHER, the successful applicant will be teaching mainly teenagers and adults and will be required to prepare effective, dynamic and well-prepared lessons at a range of levels.

    The role of EFL TEACHER (YOUNG LEARNERS) involves teaching mainly young learners aged between 3 and 12, however there may also be the opportunity to teach older learners and adults, depending on the preferences of the candidate. An ability to motivate, and interact with, young children is essential for this role, as is a creative, imaginative and fun-loving attitude to teaching.

    The average weekly number of teaching hours is 24 and there are a further 3 hours dedicated to professional development and administration.

    The CITY

    Reggio is a warm, friendly, coastal city just in front of Sicily with a centre that is small enough so that everything is within easy walking distance. Depending on the season, there is plenty to do in Reggio and its surroundings: from walking along the beaches and sailing in the sea, to skiing in the nearby mountains and eating in a cosy agriturismo.

    The city is also ideally situated for visiting other places in Italy with a small port (ferry to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands), a train station (including a fast-train to Rome), and an airport (regular flights to major Italian cities). If you’re looking for direct international flights, Catania or Lamezia (roughly 1½ hours away) have different direct connections.

    The Candidate

    Applicants should be:

     Able to deliver engaging, well-prepared, learner-centred lessons;
     Committed to promoting a positive, caring learning environment;
     Keen to develop their teaching knowledge and practical experience;
     Eager to be part of a team, sharing ideas and working together towards a common goal;
     Reliable, organised and flexible;
     Computer literate (Registers are completed, and timetables accessed, online);
     Able to maintain a positive attitude, even under pressure.
     Either CELTA or Trinity TESOL qualified (candidates with a PGCE and TEFL experience will also be considered);
     Native speaker or equivalent.

    For the role of EFL TEACHER (YOUNG LEARNERS), in addition to the above, applicants should have experience of working with young learners (age 3+). For classes of a preschool age, an Italian teaching assistant will be present to overcome the language barrier

    Due to Italian law, we are currently only able to offer employment to EU Nationals.

    There are several commonsense factors you should consider when applying for a post, attending an interview or working abroad.
  • Do not provide any banking or credit card information when applying for a job.
  • If you are concerned about divulging your home address in your resume, consider using a post office box or similar forwarding address.
  • When attending a job interview, if you feel in any way uncomfortable with the situation or the person/s you are dealing with, walk away. Also consider your work location, do you feel it is safe? Would you be happy to work there late at night?
  • Always let a friend know that you are attending an interview, when and where. acquaint yourself fully with how to get to the interview and how to get back.
  • An interview should always be arranged in daylight hours.
  • If the job appears to be "too good to be true", it probably is. Fully research the employer via web forums, search engines and previous employees. Most reputable employers should be happy to put you in touch with previous/current staff.
  • As previously stated, no reputable employer will ask you for money (even for a visa, work-permit etc.). If a tefl.com advertiser does ask you for payment, refuse and contact us immediately.

  • Register with your embassy as soon as you arrive in the host country.

  • Your safety is paramount. If you feel uneasy with any part of the application procedure or interview, walk away!

    Going abroad...
  • Get travel insurance and check that the cover is appropriate.
  • Check what vaccinations you need at least 6 weeks before you go and consider whether you need to take extra health precautions
  • Ensure you have a valid passport that is in good condition and the necessary visas.
