||Do research the year-round climate for the part of the country you will be living and working in. Relying on 'general impressions' can result in a shock.
"While browsing through the FAQs section of your website and also some job opportunities posted on your website, I noticed that a " first degree " is often mentioned. Does it matter what field this degree is in or will any university degree be acceptable? The answer to this question has quite an impact on my plan since I'm assuming all I need at the moment to be qualified to teach English as a second language abroad is a TESOL certification course.

SBC teachers are an integral part of a successful summer and it is often their ability to engage the students both in and out of the classroom in a fun yet professional manner that ensures that students are happy throughout their stay.
All teachers work a 13 session week, with a session being either a morning, afternoon or evening. Of these 13 sessions, 5 are spent in the classroom, whilst the other 8 are spent helping with the activities programme or on pastoral duties, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the students during meals, in break times, in the boarding houses and at night. This breakdown means that the majority of sessions will be out of the classroom, so it is important teaching staff are enthusiastic and ready to actively engage in all aspects of the summer school programme. All teachers will usually receive one full day off per week.
The teachers report directly to the Director of Studies and must:
Become familiar with the SBC syllabus, materials and resources during induction week
Assist the Director of Studies in testing students on their arrival and marking test papers
Teach lessons using the SBC syllabus and other appropriate materials
Maintain administrative systems by preparing and keeping class lists, records of work, class registers and preparing certificates and reports
Attend to the individual needs of the students to ensure that maximum benefit is gained from the English Course
Manage the classroom behaviour effectively and ensure all students participate
Attend meetings as requested by the summer school management
Attend teacher development workshops
Be observed by the Director of Studies
Activity Programme Duties
Engage fully in the activity programme, leading, assisting and taking part in activities
Assist in preparing for an activity if necessary
Lead groups of students on excursions, following pre-planned itineraries
Ensure that the students are safe and engaged in the activity or excursion at all times
All members of staff have a general duty to care for the students at the summer school and as such will be expected to carry out the following duties:
Assist with meal time and break time supervision when required
Supporting the House Parent when doing House Duty, including escorting students to their boarding houses and supervising students while in the houses
Wake up and lights out duties when supporting the House Parent
Help ensure that the students do not breach the rules of the school
Assist at any time, whether on duty or not, with an emergency situation, or where a student is ill or injured
Engage with the students outside of classes and assigned activity sessions in a friendly but professional manner
|In accordance with the British Council accreditation scheme, all SBC Teachers must posses the required qualifications outlined below. A minimum of one years teaching experience is essential. |
SBC is committed to creating a native English speaking environment for our students, as such applications from native English speakers will be greatly preferred, but is not essential.
Educated to degree level or equivalent
Trinity CertTESOL or CELTA, and/or Primary QTS or PGCE in English/modern languages with ELT/TESOL subsidiary
Previous professional teaching experience
Passion for working with young learners
Previous residential summer school experience
Experience of leading students in an extracurricular capacity
An interest in sports / arts & crafts / music / drama
Please note; as a large part of the teaching role is spent engaging and leading students outside the classroom and in the Social Programme, applicants who can discuss their suitability in these areas will be at an advantage.

|All SBC teachers receive £475 per week (which includes holiday allowance at 12.07% of basic pay) plus accommodation on-site and full board, teachers will receive one full day off per week. |
