EF English First Chongqing Schools
TEACH ENGLISH IN THE LARGEST CITY IN THE WORLD! EF Chongqing is currently looking for full time native English teachers to start work immediately. Situated in the very heart of Asia it is a perfect place to experience both teaching and living in the cultural melting pot of China’s far west. We are looking for dedicated, caring teachers with prior experience and qualifications in the ESL field, who can deliver quality lessons and meet the high standards expected by our students.
EFCQ is a dynamic system of schools located in the heart of Chongqing Municipality. The city is expanding—often referred to as the ‘largest city you’ve never heard of’—and with this expansion there EF is able to provide more and more opportunities for teaching and development.
The Chongqing team started out small. In 2009 we could fit all of our teachers on one couch in an apartment. Now we have 25+ members of the academic team with three schools, and we are still growing. Chongqing is a rapidly developing city that has really opened up to the outside world in the past 25 years. There’s an eclectic mix of old and new; it makes for a decidedly Chinese experience, but there are Western perks throughout the city as well.
COURSES Here at EFCQ, we offer a range of courses to accommodate the youngest, inexperienced user all the way up through adults. A breakdown of the courses we offer: Small Stars—this is a course designed for 3-6 year-old students. We use an integrated approach in this course which involves Total Physical Response (TPR), Task Based Learning and the principle of Learning to Learn, among others. Students are placed in SS classes according to age. There is a maximum of 10 students in each SS course. High Flyers—this is our course designed for 7-10 year-olds. We try to ensure that all of our classes are truly communicative, and the course is designed around functional language. Students are placed in classes according to ability, pre-determined by an oral placement test. HF students also have regular assessment and graduation ceremonies. There is a maximum of 15 students in each class. Trailblazers—this is our most recently launched course for kids aged 10-13. The course books are plot-based and very graphic with a heavy online component to bring language skills into the 21st century. This course marries independent learning with in-class teaching for an experience truly befitting of today’s teens. This course also includes regular formal assessment. There is a maximum of 15 students in each class. Trailblazers Teen—This course is designed for 14-18 year-olds and helps them focus on real-world skills, like getting into college and being social in a mixed culture environment. This course also includes formal assessment and project work. There is a maximum of 15 students in each class. Real English—This is primarily an online course, with EF Teachers acting as mentors through Life Clubs and monthly testing sessions. Sometimes we will also have one-on-one classes with our adults. There is a maximum of 15 students in each class. Life Clubs—These clubs provide opportunities for different students, different teachers, different schools, different topics, different levels to come together and show off the language they’ve acquired in interesting and situational ways, as well as providing a rich cultural exchange. We use our specially-designed Life Club Zone, chEF station and EPC room for these clubs, as well as hosting citywide field trips and events.
RESOURCES and DEVELOPMENT We have more resources here than most people could think of. In addition to all of the materials provided by EF—flashcards, worksheets, tests, ppts, audio, video, IWB packs, lesson plans, course books, teacher’s books, puppets, etc—we take a lot of pride in creating our own resources , as well as getting our hands on the best supplementary resource books available. We share and file any resources we make in house, and we have a lot of creative freedom in developing our own materials.
We offer different kind of professional development here in Chongqing, and you’d be hard-pressed to find better development opportunities in other schools in the city or even in China. Each week we host training workshop, and each month we have a module focus on, like “Back to Basics”, “Teaching the 4 Skills”, “Classroom Management” and “Getting to Know Phonics”, to name a few. We offer IELTS training to our local teachers, and we regularly take modules of the Cambridge TKT exam. All new teachers are required to take the Cambridge TKTYL and receive a TEFL certificate (if needed) within probation period.
Before arriving at EFCQ you will start the onboarding process, which continues upon your arrival and through the first 6-9 months of your contract. We also have regular peer, ST and DoS observations and feedback as well as formal performance appraisals at 3 and 9 months.
LOGISTICS—Getting everything ready for the move to China can be daunting when trying to do it on your own; the same can be said for arriving in a foreign place. Not to worry—both before and after your arrival, we are equipped to guide you, answer any questions and hold your hands as much or as little as you need, whether it’s something like going to the bank or finding out the best supermarkets to buy your favorite items from back home.
THE CITY—Chongqing is its own beast. Formerly part of Sichuan, it is now its own municipality, with a population of between 30 and 34 million people (depending on which website you check). Famous for all things spicy, Chongqingers brag about their hot weather, hot women and hot food. Hot pot is the famous local cuisine, so those who are afraid of spice might need some training on the best places to avoid spicy food!
There are plenty of opportunities to stay busy, whether attending Ciqikou ancient town, Foreigner Street, Sichuan opera performances, Dazu rock carvings or any of the mountain retreats around the city.
Beyond chuan cai (Sichaun food) and huo guo (hotpot), there are also plenty of Western restaurants around. Beyond just KFC and McDonald’s, you can find gelato shops, a Tex-Mex restaurant, an Irish bar, an apartment bar/restaurant and plenty of Pizza, from Suzie’s to Pizza Hut to Papa John’s.
Chongqing is an easy city to get into and out of. The train station is where you need to go if you want to take a 2 hour fast train to Chengdu and the pandas, and the Jiangbei airport hosts international departures and arrivals. It’s also not as far out of the city as a lot of western airports.
THE SCHOOLS—currently we have 3 EF Schools in Chongqing: JieFangBei New York, New York is our school located in the heart of the city. It’s also our first EF school in Chongqing. Recently renovated, it has great views of the city center, as it’s on the 13th floor. Our largest school in terms of student numbers is Paradise Walk in JiangBei district. Inside the premiere shopping center in Chongqing, one can feel a little spoiled with 2 Starbucks in the same building and 2 international supermarkets within walking distance of the school. This school was also recently renovated. Our newest school—opened in October 2011—is Dragon Lake school in Yubei district. It’s the largest school (in terms of size) and is located in the new north zone of Chongqing. It also boasts some of the best Sichuan food and Hotpot in the city.
AWARDS and REECOGNITION—Chongqing schools have been awarded the best overall student experience award (2009) and best resource and product implementation award (2012) at EF’s National Conferences, held each year. We have also had 4 teachers win the Life Club Contributor of the Month award (an accolade given to one teacher in one EF school in 3 countries—Russia, Indonesia and China). EFCQ has also been a stopping point for other schools, as we’ve hosted competitions and welcomed management from EF Russia to observe our Life Club program.
