Where we are:
Zhangjiagang is a “model city” famous throughout China for its cleanliness, civility, convenient location and rapid development. The city is small (population 1,200,000), prosperous and green: criss-crossed with canals, tree-lined streets and a number of large public parks and ecology gardens. The central thoroughfare, known as ‘Walking Street’, is a long pedestrianised shopping and recreation area famous for being the cleanest street in China.
Zhangjiagang offers everything you’d expect of a small, clean Chinese city: comfort, ease of navigation, a variety of authentic regional Chinese cuisine and cultural shows and theatres.
The city also offers everything you’d expect of a booming government-designated “free trade zone” with, foreign investment resulting in an active nightlife, a variety of five-star global cuisine, and ease in finding almost any Western convenience of luxury, from cosmetics through to comfort food.
The lifestyle you lead in Zhangjiagang is up to the individual: the city itself places few constraints, although you’re out of luck if you want to breathe heavily-polluted air!
The city is located on the south bank of the Yangzi River in eastern Jiangsu province. Excellent road links connect Zhangjiagang to local metropolises such as Shanghai (2 hours), Suzhou (90 minutes) and Nanjing (3 hours).
What we are:
EF English First Zhangjiagang is part of the world’s largest network of language training centres.
Our school in Zhangjiagang opened in 2002, and has grown from a small-town “kid’s school” into the most popular and trusted training centre in the city. We offer English training for everything from kindergarten-age learners through to students preparing for the international IELTS or Trinity GESE exams, including a thriving corporate language training arm working with both local exporters and multinational employers.
Our classes are small – a maximum group size of 10 learners in under-7 classes, and 14 learners in all other groups. Learners are all placement tested by experienced teachers to ensure they learn in the most appropriate level, which are divided by both age and ability.
Last year we moved into a brand-new, state-of-the-art multimedia school, with specialized early learner classrooms, presentation facilities, and a networked computer and display screen in every classroom.
Who we are:
A supportive, dynamic team who care about our students and team members.
From the visa assistance, airport pickup, free Chinese lessons, tour of the city and welcome banquet, through to the regular school trips, activities, bonuses and assistance with domestic life and arranging travel tickets for holidays to the completion bonuses (or, more likely, new contract - over 75% of our teachers have stayed with us beyond their initial contracts with us since 2006), pastoral care is a priority.
Professional development is also a key priority: teachers never stop learning, especially at EF Zhangjiagang. New teachers are provided with a comprehensive induction period upon arrival, and all academic staff are provided with weekly CPD (continuous professional development) sessions. Our motivated, professional academic department includes a Director of Studies, two Senior Teachers, a team of international teachers and also a team of local Chinese teachers. The teachers’ office is well-resourced with a wide variety of supplementary material, both externally-published and developed in-school, and we thrive on sharing ideas and problems in an open, supportive environment.
Who we’re looking for:
The second half of 2010 will be an exciting time as we continue to to grow, while embracing newly developed, cutting edge materials developed by EF (including touch screen computers and interactive classroom games). We have a number of positions for committed, creative teachers to join a thriving school in a beautiful modern city. Regardless whether an experienced teacher looking for a change, or new teacher looking to begin your career, working at EF Zhangjiagang would suit personable teachers who enjoy contributing to a team and taking responsibility for their own and their learners’ development.
Qualifications
Full-time teachers should fulfill two of the following three criteria:
Further qualifications or relevant classroom experience are considered desirable but not essential, as the centre provides a comprehensive induction period and regular on-going teacher training, development and support.
Compensation
For new teachers, a starting net salary of 5,500RMB for the first three months increases to 6,000RMB per month for the remainder of the contract, with 10% annual increases for re-signing teachers thereafter.
Our remuneration package extends far beyond basic salary, however.
The school also provides all EF Zhangjiagang teachers with:
- An annual 9,000RMB airfare reimbursement
- 12 days’ annual paid public holiday
- An additional 10 days’ annual paid holiday, scheduled at teachers’ wishes
- Free privately rented accommodation within walking distance of the school and city centre. The accommodation is modern and fully furnished, and shared with one other teacher
- Teachers wishing to live alone receive a housing subsidy equivalent to half the rental costs of a shared apartment
- Full reimbursement for all visa and residence permit costs
- Basic personal insurance including medical, property and liability cover
- Bonuses for contract completion and student retention
- Regular school-funded dinners, trips and social and sporting activities
- Free Chinese lessons
