Details of Position
We anticipate that over 75% of the timetable will be YL teaching and the remainder will be teaching adults.
Our teaching staff have been with us an average of 5 years, testimony to both the quality of teachers we employ and the respect with which we treat them.
A standard teaching week consists of approximately 26 teaching hours (45min), taught in 45, 60 or 90 min. blocks. Timetables differ, but typically 50% of classes would be taught on site and the remainder in nearby schools and companies. Split days are kept to a minimum.
Candidates should have excellent communication skills and a passion for teaching effectively as well as an openness to try new classroom activities. We conduct observations and teacher development sessions, and our staff cooperate to spread best practice.
Liberec is a small city with a population of 100 000, and is 100km north of Prague. It lies in a valley between two mountain ranges, and is a winter sports destination. Liberec has a university and thus a large student population. Our school is located near the historical centre of the city, in relatively newly refurbished, purposely designed premises.
The school was founded in 1995 and is owned and run by teachers, for teachers and students.
We give new teachers help in finding suitable accommodation and with negotiating Czech officials. We also give new teachers an introduction to specific issues concerning teaching English to Czech students.
QualificationsGiven that our vacancy is urgent, we are looking for an EU passport holder. The ideal candidate will have teaching or other experience with children of all ages, is keen on improving their classroom techniques and communication skills with children and teenagers. Qualifications are an advantage, but ability is paramount, and if you have the skills, strength of personality and sensitivity to gain and hold the attention of young learners and motivate and engage teenagers, then lets talk. They will receive a great deal of support regarding course planning and classroom activities, and will work closely with 3 or 4 other YL teachers and 10 or more other members of our teaching staff. Excellent English skills, native speaker or CPE level are essential.
Salary and BenefitsTeachers can either work as employees, or under their own business licence. The majority of teachers work under their own business licence (which the school assists teachers in attaining), and invoice between 20K and 25K Czech Crowns per month. This affords teachers a comfortable standard of living. Teachers may also work as employees, with paid holidays etc, in which case their gross monthly salary is approx. 14K Czech Crowns. Teachers are given assistance with all aspects of legalization and settling. However we do not pay travel costs to the Czech Republic. Teachers are also given free Czech lessons. Some of our native speakers have now settled in Czech and pay mortgages etc. out of their salary. Monthly rent can vary from 4 000,-Kc for shared accommodation (which is currently available with one of our existing teachers) to 7 500,-Kc for a single occupancy flat.

Swallow School of English was founded in 1995. In 1997 the school moved into Liberec town centre and employed 4 teachers. This year there are 16 teachers and we anticipate further expansion. The school premises consist of 8 classrooms, reception, preparation and kitchen areas, all recently refurbished. We have disabled access and free parking. There is a well stocked resource centre, to which teachers are encouraged to add at the school's expense, as long as they don't duplicate existing material. Teachers also have free access to the photocopier, use of computers and WIFI throughout the school. We aim to provide maximum quality to both teachers and students in every aspect of our activity.
