Job Summary

Brighton Language College (BLC) is looking for a well organised, experienced team player to become part of Brighton's fastest growing independent language school in the heart of the city. You will oversee the management of the Academic Department maintaining high EFL teaching standards whilst developing the college's academic profile as we move into 2018. You must be flexible, approachable, creative, responsible, possess good IT skills and be able to work as part of a team.

Details of Position

Core Duties - Managerial

Liaison with senior staff.
Structuring academic programme to ensure maximum learning opportunities.
Create a weekly timetable and teachers schedule.
Leadership of all teaching staff.

Core Duties - Financial

Submitting and managing a budget for the teaching department
Ensuring that all operations of the teaching department are made considering the profitability of the overall business.

Core Duties - Academic

Be responsible for high standards of teaching in the classroom, thus ensuring that the students benefit from well-organised, structured learning at an appropriate level.
Following a programme of teacher observations.
Keeping records of teacher observations.
Ensuring that teachers follow course book and supplementary materials directed by you.
Ensuring that teachers prepare thoroughly and effectively for all classes.
Ensuring that all teachers maintain up to date registers, progress cards and records.
Covering for teacher absences in the classroom.
Supporting teachers with lesson planning.
Punctuality of teacher and students, arriving and leaving classroom at correct times
Encouraging lively student participation in a well-structured environment
Tidy and safe classroom & student files
Organising and carrying out student placement testing, student tests, student inductions, end of course assessments and report writing/certificates in conjunction with teachers.
Ensuring sufficient equipment available for effective teaching and are kept in good working order
Maintaining a professional appearance at all times; smart-casual clothes in the classroom.
Dealing with student or teacher problems, particularly relating to the academic programme.
Dealing with teacher/student complaints (referring to others as appropriate).
Responsibility for quality control of lessons.
Effective managements of all teaching resources.
Responding to student, parent, group leader, agent enquiries regarding academic matters.
Teacher Training and professional development.
Teaching programme development.
Facilitating the development of syllabi for all courses.

Report to the Director any issues related to teachers job performance.
Collaborating with other team members to streamline and improve processes.
Flexible attitude necessary to deal with unexpected situations.
Attending management meetings when required.
Timetabling classes and teachers across multiple buildings and courses.
Teacher recruitment with school Registrar.
Ensuring complete and accurate personnel records are kept for all teaching staff.
Preparing teachers hours for payroll processing.
Attend training sessions as may be required.
Welfare responsibilities

Manage and deliver student academic counselling
Ensure that you are adhering to the requirements of The Children Act (1987), the British Council Accreditation Scheme as well as any new employment legislation.
Ensuring policies of child protection, bullying, behaviour management, Prevent Strategy, and school rules are followed.
Must be fully aware of all published emergency procedures in case of fire, accident, (etc.)


A first degree
DELTA or DipTESOL or equivalent

Salary and Benefits

Salary £25,000 - £30,000 dependent on qualifications and experience.
