Each year, thousands of people all over the world take one of the hundreds of available short pre-service courses that lead to the award of a certificate in English Language Teaching (ELT) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Caroline Brandt's book is an invaluable guide to anyone thinking of enrolling in one of these courses. With a clear and concise structure that follows your general interest in TESOL right through to the intricacies of the course itself, it can be used from initial research stages to final qualifications, and beyond. Chapters include: Introducing English Language Teaching, Becoming a qualified English Language teacher, Knowing your certificate course, Getting started, Working together, Learning, Achieving your potential, and Being qualified. Throughout "Success on Your English Language Teaching Certificate Course", there are snapshots of student's experiences in their own words, and summaries of key points for you to take with you - whether into the next stage of learning or the next day's teaching. Learning Teaching by Jim Scrivener

Learning Teaching has been one of the most successful guides to English since it was first published in 1994. Not only a superb textbook for initial training courses, it is also a no-nonsense handbook for practising ELT teachers, helping you to succeed from class to class, from week to week and from year to year. This book will help you to deepen your understanding of what happens – and of what is possible – in the language classroom. But Jim Scrivener’s approach is not merely theoretical: Learning Teaching is packed with practical – and immediately useable – activities. In this brand new edition, the text has been revised and extended to provide an even richer resource and to take account of recent changes in thinking about ELT. In particular, it includes more detailed coverage of lexical issues.

The Cambridge Guide to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

A concise insight into TESOL courses and topics
This book is excellant for students and teachers alike. It has been clearly categorised for ease of reference and I found that this helped immensly for refering to topics and aspects of the course. Every thing that you need to know can be found in this book ranging from the history of various topics to the future trends of TESOL. A plus to this book is the ability to skip chapters or read from cover to cover. Each chapter has been broken down into subheadings which break up that block text. Whether you know all there is to know about TESOL or if you are someone who hasnt a clue (like myself at the time) You will after reading this book.A big thumbs up.

Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-development and Methodology Guide by Jerry G. Gebhard

Up-to-date and to the point; a bridge of theory and practice
This is a book on language teaching for language teachers. The book takes the view that language teachers must be responsible for making the ideas in the book real for their own particular contexts. The book starts with self-development as a theme and then moves on to teaching skills. Jerry Gebhard is careful to point out that he is not providing a bag of tricks as each application is backed-up with a sound theoretical perspective. The references in each section are excellent if the busy teacher has some time to read in more depth. Also, each chapter has activities that teachers can explore in order to apply the chapter information to their own particular context. What I especially like is that these activities encourage teachers to talk to other teachers and colleagues. This is where real self-development starts. This book, then, is a welcome user friendly addition to the field of English Language Teaching. If the user is a teacher, you have found the right book!
