The Xenophobe's Guide to the Belgians (Xenophobe's Guide S.) by Antony Mason

    Fun and reasonably accurate generalisation
I am Irish and live in brussels and I bought this book to try and get an idea of what to expect from the Belgians. It has helped explain where they are coming from, their home life, and their interests/obsessions. Of course, it is impossible to generalise about a group of such people of such diverse origin, history and culture, but it hightlights the many likeable characteristics of the Belgians and their country.

Bruges (Cadogan Guides) by Antony Mason

    Excellent, clear, comprehensive
Excellent guide for those looking for a book that concentrates on Bruges. Many other guides seem to mention Bruges only briefly, concentrating on Brussels or trying to cover other cities such as Antwerp and Ghent.
The guide divides the city into sectors, making identification of suitable accomodation and places to eat quite easy. Excellent routes given for varied and interesting walks. Good, concise history section.
Major plus point for us was the inclusion of wheelchair accessibility - clear notes on accessible hotels, bars, restaurants, shops etc. Many guides just give a phone number to call for more info - this guide does a great job of actually providing useful info itself.
Ideal if you're staying in Bruges and don't want / need to know about the other cities. Highly recommended.

Bruges (Europe Popout Maps) by Group Map

    A must for any traveller
A brilliant little map which folds up on itself, the perfect size for fitting into a shirt or trouser pocket.
Detail is good and it's 2 views of both the town centre and the area outlying are excellent.
Great for spotting where those ellusive landmarks are!

A Tall Man in a Low Land: Some Time Among the Belgians by Harry Pearson

Hilarious - it made me cry laughing
As a Brit living in Belgium for years I thought I had seen and heard of most of the idiosyncracies of the Belgians. The many that I recognised (and that the Belgians, be they from Wallonia or Flanders, will cheerfully admit to) were beautifully described - hence the crying with laughter. He truly has a talent for describing interactions with people. I could just picture the situations. I knew I would enjoy it from the early description of his attempts to get information from the Belgian Tourist and I was not disappointed.
However, I also learnt a lot from the book. He does not shy away from tackling some of Belgium's darker side - and let's face it, every country has one - but his observations were thought-provoking and he avoids being judgemental.
