ELT and JOURNALISM
"I am interested in doing a TEFL course to compliment my existing skills. I have been a journalist for two years and hold BA(Hons) in English Literature and an NCTJ post-graduate diploma in Newspaper Journalism. I would like the freedom to choose any country in the world that will take a teacher, but which course do I choose, bearing in mind I currently work full-time? I would also like to keep my hand in at writing, especially involving conservation and environmental issues. Are you aware of any such positions available or any other bodies, similar to yourself that may cater for this mix? "

QUALIFIED NON-NATIVE SPEAKER TEACHER
| Q. I am French and have been living in England for 6 years, 2 years ago I successfully completed my Trinity college certificate in TESOL with a grade B. Since then I haven't been able to get a job because most employers require native speakers only, I now wish to move to Tuscany in Italy but find it very difficult to find a job.
Most people say that I sound English and hardly have a foreign accent. Is it possible for me to ever get a chance to teach ?
A. Your main strength you can offer employers over native speakers of English is the knowledge of your first language and, e.g., the problems of first language interference for French learners of English. Therefore, perhaps if you targeted jobs teaching French native speakers, you might be successful. Also, you may find that being in the right place at the right time in Europe can produce the job opportunity you are looking for. So, when in Tuscany, if you 'do the rounds' demonstrating your ability as an EFL teacher, you could well land a job. Alternatively, a short video of you teaching to accompany your c.v. might make all the difference.
