IS AN ELT QUALIFICATION REALLY NECESSARY?
| Q. I am a 28-year old Romanian citizen, so a non-EU citizen. I have above average education, I have a B.A. in English Language, a M.A. in British and American Studies and I am presently enrolled in a PhD program in English Linguistics. I also have a relatively rich teaching experience, five years with university students majoring in Law and Economics and two years teaching business professionals. I also have advanced level Italian and Spanish. Do I need a TEFL degree.
A. You do not say whether you taught EFL to your law students and business professionals. If your teaching experience was in EFL, then a TEFL qualification is probably not essential. If, on the other hand, it was in other fields, a qualification at at least certificate level would heighten your awareness of the specifics of learning and teaching a second language.
