"I am thinking of doing a teaching English course, but there are so many institutions offering courses at the moment. To start off with, is it better to go for a diploma than for a certificate. "

Finding a job after long absence
Q.
I am a third year English Student studying at Manchester University. Since my TESOL course in 1997, I have only been able to do nine months teaching with a charity in Namibia. However, when I finish in June, I plan to go abroad to further a career in teaching. Do you think that getting a job will be a problem after such a long abscence? and is there anything I can do to secure a placement at this stage, or must I wait until June before applying?

A.
It will very much depend on where you want to go and the supply and demand situation for teachers in that country/region. However, with a first degree, a TESOL qualification and experience, you should stand a good chance of finding a teaching position in many countries. Initial approaches to language training establishments cannot go wrong. It may not secure a post immediately but does bring your name to their attention and will probably also provide you with information on the likelihood of future employment.
