THE MATURE TEACHER IN SPAIN...
Q.
I am 62, have a BA Hons.degree, Teaching Certificate + Diploma in TESOL from a UK teacher training college.I am hoping to buy a flat/house in Spain/Mallorca shortly. I have many years teaching experience in Sierra Leone as well as in Britain. For the last nine years I have worked as a Section 11 teacher in inner London dealing with children whose first language is not English. The Diploma course was rigorous and I gained an A grade but did not have a teaching component. (I have taught all ages - in Sierra Leone I taught adults and secondary). Could I find a ESOL post there do you think (preferably with young children) or would I be considered too old? Is there any country otherwise where I might be considered?

A.
The EFL/ESL profession is traditionally thought of as being for the "young" and many schools in Spain do actively seek younger teachers. However, increasingly employers are becoming aware of the value of the older teacher, particularly as learners and parents of learners become more sophisticated in terms of knowing what they want and insisting upon it. Generally, this means value for money and the more experienced teacher can usually provide this consistently. If employment in a language school was not readily forthcoming, I would still think that there was a ready private market. However, it is a question of making contacts. Once that is achieved, private language teaching can be quite a lucrative option.
