  MA SOUND INVESTMENT?
"Is getting a TESOL MA worth the time and money? I'm British, presentable, nearly fifty with a BA, TESOL Cert, a tax-inspector background and three years teaching experience in China and Taiwan. I like my present post but I'd really rather be working (for a living wage!) in the UK or Germany or, if still in Taiwan, enjoying steadier hours and paid holidays teaching adults or tertiary students. Would anyone care to speculate: by approximately how much will my chances of securing a steady job be improved by spending a year and much of my savings on a year at University? Bear in mind that, for what it would cost me, I could cover unpaid annual holidays from the present job for the next decade or so. "

IS THE DIPLOMA MARKETABLE IN THE US?
Q.
I'm from the U.S. and I'm about to finish my second year teaching in Bydgoszcz, Poland, doing mostly business classes. My school has mentioned the possibility of paying for me to do the RSA/Cambridge Diploma course next summer and, while I know the course would be helpful as far as my teaching skills are concerned, I have a couple of concerns. First, how marketable will I be in the States if I have the Diploma certificate? Secondly, is the Diploma the best training for someone who wants to specialize in business teaching? If not, is there another training course that would better suit me?

A.
A diploma course is useful wherever you want to teach but I believe that a Masters in TESOL may be favoured in the U.S. The best thing would be to check with major ESL employers there and also to see what qualifications people are asking for in their job advertisements. If you wish to specialise in Business English, there are courses that focus on that for teachers with no business background. However, if you have a background in business, the 'business' content of these is often quite elementary. The ideal mix would be experience in business and a TEFL/TESL qualification and experience. Why not put it all in to the 'lifelong learning' plan?
