Short EFL contract to test the waters
"I am currently studying a post-graduate certificate in education and have completed a TEFL certificate. I am looking for a 3 month contract to diversify my teach experience, and to establish whether EFL is the subject I will pursue as my primary subject. Please could you advise me as to the likelihood of such a position outside Europe? "

AN AUSTRALIAN IN EUROPE
Q.
I'm an Australian ESL teacher and I'd like to teach in Western Europe (particularly Spain or Italy) but it seems all the positions require EU passports. Is there any way an Australian can teach in these countries?

A.
There certainly is a preference for EU citizens as European Union countries have agreed this policy. Non EU citizens are entitled to apply for residence and work permits within the EU and may have their application accepted if it can be proved that they are the only adequate person for the job. Therefore, it is important first of all to convince a potential employer that that is the case and secondly, for that employer to be prepared to support that case to the authorities. Sometimes, employers will not agree to do the latter, in order to save themselves the hassle.
