  WORK PLACEMENT
"As a student of the University of Limerick in Ireland, a period of cooperative education/work placement forms an integral part of my degree. Being also a student of Spanish I intend to spend this coming semester, commencing in February/ March 2001, teaching English in Spain. Although, I can opt to have my University arrange a placement for me, this option restricts the level of personal choice allowed. I have recently completed a short introductory course in TEFL, which was hosted by my home University, however I can't help wondering if this will be enough to secure a reasonably good position should I choose to find my own. Even though I am open to suggestions, of all destinations in Spain, Seville springs to mind. If you could point me in the right direction at all it would be greatly appreciated. My degree is that of BA European Studies, namely law, history, Spanish, and German, and I am also taking Japanese as part of the Business degree."

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED TO TEACH?
Q.
What does ELT mean? What qualifications are needed to become a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language? Are there any universities or colleges in Jamaica that offer TEFL courses?

A.
ELT stands for English Language Teaching. To be a teacher of English as a Foreign Language one generally requires a first degree and a post graduate TEFL/TESL qualification. However, some schools and organisations will employ with a degree only or indeed simply by virtue of the applicant being a native speaker. I am unaware of TEFL courses on offer in Jamaica but an enquiry to the local education authority should be able to answer your question.
