  OVER QUALIFIED?
"I have a Masters degree in linguistics and over 20 years teaching experience both at secondary and tertiary levels. Yet all my recent job applications to language schools in Europe and Japan have been turned down. They say they are only looking for a first degree and no experience is necessary. Is this the trend now and, if so, am I over qualified? "

WHERE TO NEXT?
Q.
I have been teaching English as a Foreign language in southern Europe for the past 11 years and would like to move on to something else while remaining within the profession. Have you any suggestions?

A.
I suggest you look at your strengths and the kind of work you enjoy doing before taking any major career change decisions. If you are a good organiser and you are most probably a good people manager with 11 years' classroom management experience behind you, you might want to consider a management role. An MBA would be an asset but it is a big and expensive step to take if you are unsure. Perhaps ask for/volunteer to take on more responsibility for organising your schools' programmes and 'test the waters'. Alternatively, if you enjoy the creative side of teaching, you may wish to opt for teacher training. There are 'training for trainers' courses on the market but again there is nothing quite like shadowing an experienced trainer 'on the job' so, you may want to look for a job where that sort of opportunity would present itself. There again, there's the big world of CALL, expanding still more with the Internet. If you have IT skills and this type of work appeals to you, it can present another option.
