TESOL/TEFL QUALIFICATION.. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
| Q. I would like to understand the significance of gaining a TESOL qualification, as opposed to a TEFL qualification - is one of greater value than the other, and will one of these options allow for increased job opportunities in specific countries, though not in others?
A. TESOL stands for Teaching English as a Second or Other Language while TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Initially the terms were intended to differentiate between teaching English to complete beginners who were not and never had been in a situation where they were surrounded by a certain degree of English as it was officially (or simply used) as a second language, as opposed to those who were in that situation, former British colonies in the Arabian Gulf are just one such example. Then some course providers opted for the TESOL label in order to avoid sounding Anglo-centric and now many see the terms as being interchangeable. In its initial and probably purest sense, those trained in TEFL meant that they were prepared to teach complete 0 beginners as well as though who had had exposure to the target language whereas those trained in TESOL did not necessarily have the training to teach 0 beginners. Given the current situation, the important thing is to check with the providers of any course you are considering as to whether or not training to teach complete beginners is included in their programme (no matter whether they call it TEFL or TESOL). If it isn't you may find yourself professionally disadvantaged.
