NON-NATIVE SPEAKER TEACHERS ABROAD
Q.
I'm a Russian Teacher of English, graduated from Teachers Training University in Russia. I'm interested in working abroad in TEFL.. My teaching experience is about 14 years and with Russians. I know exactly that TEFL teachers are in demand the world over. What should I do to start my career in TEFL abroad? Most of Schools consider natives. But is there any chance for non-natives to have a chance? Could you recommend me any school that could be interested in non-natives?

A.
Thankfully the profession is re-examining the value that non-native speaker teachers can bring to the learning situation . However, many schools do insist on native-speaker teachers as that is what their students' demand. Where you are most likely to succeed is in situations where the learners' first language is Russian and your in-depth knowledge of their problems will be helpful. Naturally this is most likely to occur in Russia but there must be overseas situations (perhaps Russian companies on overseas contracts) where this could also apply.
