  TEFL CERTIFICATE "EQUIVALENT"?
"I am just wondering.....all the job postings say TEFL certification or equivalent...for the posted job qualifications....what is "equivalent" to the TEFL certification??? What course work do I need to do to make sure that I will qualify for one of these teaching positions without paying lot of money for these specific certifications?"

MASTERS - ONLY WAY TO GO?
Q.
I want to teach english as a foreign language in a foreign country. I do not want to backpack around, but rather to settle for a few years in a new culture. I have a bachelor's degree in social work, and have been a journalist for the past 3 years. What I want to know: Should I get a TEFL certificate, or go for a masters degree? I talked to my local university, and they said the ONLY way to go was a master's degree. I do not trust this advice because that is their business, to get people enrolled. Please help me decide which option is plausible for obtaining a good job.

A.
A Masters is not the ONLY way to go but it does depend on where you want to teach. It is a pretty standard requirement in the USA but other countries, particularly European, look for a course which has a stong practical element with at least 6 hours observed and assessed teaching practice. There are other countries of course which will employ you simply by virtue of you being a native-speaker graduate. However, the latter is not a serious option if you want to do justice to your learners and yourself.
