DIPLOMA OR MASTERS?
Q.
I have the RSA CTEFLA and approx 4 years TEFL teaching experience. For the last 3 years however I have been working in a completely unrelated field and would desperately like to resume my EFL career. I know the DTEFLA is highly regarded in England but I now live in New York and am struggling to find information on what qualifications are highly regarded over here. I would at some stage though like to come back to England so am searching for a course that would both further qualify me in EFL and allow me to work in the USA as well as England. I have seen many job postings requiring an MA TESOL / Linguisitics - is this highly regarded in the USA as well as England? Do you know whether the DTEFLA course exists in the USA? Any information on this would be very much appreciated. - Anita

A.
It is true that a Masters in TESOL is considered to be preferable to a diploma for many EFL/ESL jobs in the USA. The difference is that the diploma is, generally speaking, a more practical qualification than a Masters. In the UK, the normal progression would be Certificate, Diploma and then Masters and some employers are wary of candidates who have a Masters but not a diploma, as they feel this does not adequately inform them of their competence in the classroom.
