MA SOUND INVESTMENT?
"Is getting a TESOL MA worth the time and money? I'm British, presentable, nearly fifty with a BA, TESOL Cert, a tax-inspector background and three years teaching experience in China and Taiwan. I like my present post but I'd really rather be working (for a living wage!) in the UK or Germany or, if still in Taiwan, enjoying steadier hours and paid holidays teaching adults or tertiary students. Would anyone care to speculate: by approximately how much will my chances of securing a steady job be improved by spending a year and much of my savings on a year at University? Bear in mind that, for what it would cost me, I could cover unpaid annual holidays from the present job for the next decade or so. "

A. A qualification beyond certificate level should undoubtedly command a better job. However, both diploma and Masters level qualifications can be taken by distance, allowing you to study and work at the same time and so help offset the outlay on the course.
