ELT and JOURNALISM
| Q. I am interested in doing a TEFL course to compliment my existing skills. I have been a journalist for two years and hold BA(Hons) in English Literature and an NCTJ post-graduate diploma in Newspaper Journalism. I would like the freedom to choose any country in the world that will take a teacher, but which course do I choose, bearing in mind I currently work full-time? I would also like to keep my hand in at writing, especially involving conservation and environmental issues. Are you aware of any such positions available or any other bodies, similar to yourself that may cater for this mix?
A. Regarding courses that cater to participants in full-time employment. There are many part-time courses where one can study in the evening. Alternatively there are now accredited online training courses available. Check out our Courses' Guide at http://tefl.com/courses/. As far as the ELT/Journalism mix is concerned. You may like to target teaching jobs that require that mix, e.g. university and college departments which teach journalism. If you wish to continue to practise the discipline of journalism in a foreign country, we would suggest that you make the appropriate enquiries at your local embassy or consulate office for that country, as to how to go about this.
