RETIRED AND READY TO TEACH
" I am a vigorous and healthy and energetic female, 65 years of age. I am just retiring from the nursing field, where I have done much work with adolescents
and children with psychiatric disorders. My degree is an Associate Degree in Nursing. I have excellent communication and teaching skills as patient care calls for this, especially with children and adolescents.
1. Is age a barrier to traveling and teaching English? 2. Are my former professional qualifications as a Registered Nurse who has taken State Boards and is Licensed in the USA, sufficient to permit a TEFL certification course. "

TEACHING AS OPPOSED TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS
| Q. What is "PGDE or equivalent" and how does it differ from TESL/TEFL
qualifications? I recently saw this in a job advertised for Hong Kong.
They were very specific about this. I have the 4 week Cert TESOL and
the 6 month Grad Cert in Education (TESOL) and working my way to a
Masters in Education (TESOL) in Australia. Is it just a difference in
terminology or do you think they meant just something other than the 4
week RSA/Celta/TESOL type course?
A. I imagine the advertisement was referring to a Post Graduate Diploma in
Education. Both PGCEs (certificate) and PGDEs are principally
'teaching' qualifications as opposed to an English language teaching
qualification, though there can be a TEFL/TESOL option as a 'major'.
They are normally of one year's duration and can be considered to
provide more of a basis on the principles of education than other
TEFL/TESOL qualifications.
